Health Care Providers

Health care providers will play a crucial role in the event of a pandemic, which could place a huge burden on the U.S. healthcare system. Preparedness is vital to make sure as many people as possible are given healthcare when needed.

Even with careful planning, it is possible that area hospitals could quickly reach overflow capacity and turn people away. Based on extrapolation of the 1957 and 1968 pandemics, estimates suggest that in Ohio there could be 26,000 to 67,000 hospitalizations and one to three million people seeking medical care, depending on the attack rate of infection during the pandemic.

Devote the time and resources to planning now to maximize available resources during a pandemic. This section’s checklists, toolkit and guidelines will assist health care providers and service organizations in planning for a pandemic outbreak.
