What the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) is doing to prepare for highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI H5N1) to strike people and/or wildlife in Ohio:
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources has joined the U.S. Department of the Interior, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the International Association of Fish &
Wildlife Agencies in monitoring for the possible appearance of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI H5N1) in North America.
Representatives of the various international flyways (pathways used by migrating birds) are working to develop plans for addressing concerns within the individual flyways
for species at highest risk of contracting the disease. ODNR Division of Wildlife staff members - leaders in the Mississippi Flyway Council - are assisting in the development
of a plan to address concerns about the migrating birds found in that flyway. They are also continuing to assist Dr. Richard Slemons of The Ohio State University with his
extensive research into all types of avian influenza. This research has been ongoing for many years.
ODNR Division of Wildlife staff members routinely receive updates and training on wildlife diseases, including HPAI H5N1. Most have just received this training from the Southeast
Cooperative Wildlife Disease Research Unit so that they may be better informed when speaking with hunters and other outdoor enthusiasts about the disease.
In addition, ODNR has developed an internal plan for keeping the agency's core functions (licensing, permitting, inspections) operating in the event of a human pandemic involving
HPAI H5N1.
