The Ohio Department of Health (ODH) leads the state’s efforts to prepare for and respond to an influenza pandemic. As such, ODH calls upon more than a century of experience
protecting the health and safety of the state’s residents. ODH works alongside the state’s local health departments and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
at the federal level to prepare for potential cases of human-acquired bird flu or some other pandemic strain of the virus.
The department and its public health, health care and private sector partners engaged in a 120-day comprehensive effort from December 2005 to March 2006 to assure the Ohio pandemic
flu plan is operationally consistent with federal and local issues and concerns.
The Ohio Department of Health has numerous human disease surveillance, monitoring and reporting programs for medical practitioners, hospitals and local health departments to detect
and monitor flu outbreaks, such as, sentinel physician provider surveillance, RODS (real-time outbreak and disease surveillance system) surveillance and year-round laboratory testing capability.
