How would a flu pandemic affect your family?

Experts believe a worldwide outbreak, or pandemic, of influenza will happen someday. Whether the currently circulating H5N1 avian (bird) flu virus is the one that sparks the next pandemic is not know. But in the absence of any control measures (vaccination or drugs), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 15 to 35 percent of the U.S. Population could be affected by pandemic flu, that means one to three million people seeking medical care and 26,000 to 67,000 hospitalizations.

Families need to be prepared for pandemic flu just as they would for any other emergency. Begin by understanding the needs of your family in an emergency situation. Do you need to make alternate arrangements for young children should school or daycares be temporarily closed? Do you have small children that need to be entertained should electricity shut down? Does anyone in your family have a caregiver or special needs?
